The Digest for Health Transformers & Changemakers

Computing power has only recently caught up to the complexity of biology, and Alzheimer’s research may be better positioned for progress than it has been in years. We sat down with Gregory Moore, MD, PhD, Senior Adviser to Gates Ventures on the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative and Professor of Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry at Penn State University, to understand why. In his words, “AI tools are only as useful as the harmonized, accessible data behind them.” He shares how the free AD Workbench gives more than 15,000 researchers across 129 countries access to 380+ datasets, AI tools, and computing power. He also looks back at the Alzheimer’s Insights AI Prize, which awarded two $1M first prizes due to the quality of the applications, and explains why bringing people together in person creates “a catalytic environment for progress.”

"Nobody trains you on what services are available. Nobody tells you how to decide where to go, and people just guess, or Google, or ChatGPT," Cristian Pascual said in a recent Health Moonshot Update. Mediktor’s answer is a virtual triage tool that assesses symptoms and guides users to the right level of care, work that Pascual says has always run on AI, just not the kind grabbing headlines today.
