The Digest for Health Transformers & Changemakers
When there’s a family caregiver, there are two patients in every exam room. A physician can only see one of them.
That is the framework Katie Brandt, director of caregiver support services at Massachusetts General Hospital's Frontal Temporal Disorders Unit, brings to neurologists at Harvard Medical School – and it is the lens she brought to the StartUp Health community recently for an expert AMA session.
Brandt has been a caregiver for 18 years, runs the largest FTD support group in the country, and has navigated every layer of the dementia care system from the inside. She covered the true financial cost of caregiving (disproportionately borne by women, nearly double for young onset families), why verbal caregiver reports fail in clinical settings, where AI is genuinely helping and where it falls short, and what a system that actually works for families would look like.
The highlights below are a partial window into a rich and personal, hour-long conversation. StartUp Health members attended live and can access the full session recording through our membership app.

“I found this community to be incredibly incredibly valuable and supportive. I've been coaching pitch teams at the University of Tampa Entrepreneurship Center for 15 years. I've done many of my own. I'm judging competitions and yet every time we get on a call, I learn something new. Somebody points something out that I miss. So, it's extremely valuable,” says Chuck Papageorgiou of NeuroEm Therapeutics.
