The Digest for Health Transformers & Changemakers
Heart failure patients often describe living in a black box between doctor visits, with no way to know if things are stable or quietly getting worse. StartUp Health member Sean Matsuoka, CEO & Co-founder of General Prognostics (GPx), built his company to open that black box using a tool patients already own: a smartwatch.
GPx's algorithm correlates wearable data with NT-proBNP, a blood biomarker doctors already rely on, to flag worsening heart failure with meaningful lead time before a crisis. Matsuoka calls it a "CGM for heart failure" – continuous and non-invasive.
The work is personal. Matsuoka lost his grandmother to heart failure and watched her live with the uncertainty that GPx now aims to eliminate for others.
